Metropolitan Family Services
Letter Content
Mentoring, motivating, and advocating in the Chicago area since 1857 — all so that families can achieve their greatest potential.
Metropolitan is one of Illinois’ largest and most well-respected human services agencies, reaching more than 117,000 families and individuals, as diverse as the neighborhoods in which they live. With seven major community centers, in Chicago, Evanston/ Skokie, the southwest suburbs, and DuPage County, Metropolitan assists low-income and working-poor families facing a complex and ever-changing environment.
Through a range of holistic social and legal services — early learning, afterschool programs, job readiness, counseling, mental health, Legal Aid — Metropolitan promotes education, economic stability, emotional wellness, and empowerment. They meet the needs of our communities by listening, participating, and leading the way. Ultimately, this is the catalyst that enables families to realize their own amazing strengths.
Metropolitan’s emphasis on wrap-around programming ensures it reaches not only one family member, but also supports the unique and evolving needs of the entire family. A focus on collaboration extends Metropolitan’s reach even further, as it works with community partners to develop its programming while strengthening the neighborhoods where it operates.

In addition to its work in education, economic stability, emotional wellness, and empowerment, Metropolitan Family Services is the convener of Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P), a collaboration among nine of Chicago’s leading outreach organizations who have combined their expertise to jointly impact nine Chicago communities most affected by gun violence.
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, TDFF took immediate and decisive action to strengthen families and the community. We wanted to ensure that Metropolitan had the resources it needed to provide mental health services, purchase PPE, and support basic needs for clients.
Spotlight Quote
The Duchossois Family Foundation has provided Metropolitan with thoughtful and steadfast leadership since 1996. TDFF’s involvement includes the tenure of Metropolitan’s Board Chair Emeritus Ashley D. Joyce, which was extended to support our ability to nimbly navigate the pandemic. The Foundation has consistently been committed, forward thinking, and generous.”
