We are fortunate to stand on the shoulders of an incredible legacy. These are some of the moments that have shaped our story.
1980
Beverly Thrall Duchossois. The family matriarch passes away due to cancer at age 57. Alongside her husband Richard L. Duchossois, Beverly instilled in the family the importance of giving back to the community.
1984
The Duchossois Family Foundation. TDFF is founded in memory of Beverly Thrall Duchossois, and Kimberly T. Duchossois is named president. It’s primary mission, from the start and for the next thirty years, is to support cancer research and patient services, as well as advance society through educational scholarships and social services.

1987
Dr. John Ultmann. The Duchossois Family pledges $1 million to further invest in Dr. Ultmann’s cancer research efforts and to build the Beverly Duchossois Cancer Laboratories at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
1994
Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine. TDFF makes its first major gift of $21 million to the University of Chicago Medical Center for cancer research. The gift launches the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, which has transformed the lives of countless patients, and establishes the John Ultmann Professorship.
2003
Patient Navigation Services. TDFF donates $10 million to the American Cancer Society to sponsor the creation of their Patient Navigation Services, a nationwide program that serves millions of cancer patients who need guidance and support.
2006
Further Investment in Cancer Research. The Duchossois family, long-time champions of science and medicine at the University of Chicago, donates $10 million to support cancer research and the study of metastasis.
2014
Transformational Legacy. R. Bruce Duchossois, son of Richard L. Duchossois, passes away due to esophageal cancer at age 64. A major portion of his estate is designated to the Foundation, granting it a strong base from which to grow philanthropic endeavors and continue the family legacy.
2015
30-Year Anniversary. TDFF celebrates 30 years of Kimberly T. Duchossois’ leadership. Led by the next generation, the board reorganizes and creates a new strategy — from supporting cancer research, patient services, scholarships, and social services to wellness and economic opportunity. Ashley Duchossois Joyce named as President of the Foundation.

2017
Duchossois Family Institute. Harnessing the Microbiome and Immunity for Human Health. DFI is established at the University of Chicago with $100 million ($50 million from TDFF and $50 million from Janet & Craig Duchossois). The DFI drives innovation and transformative care at UChicago Medicine, changing lives in the process.
2019
Veteran Strategy. With 100% family support, the board votes to focus the mission of wellness and economic opportunity, specifically within the veteran community. Turning to veterans is a nod to the Duchossois’ history of service. The beloved patriarch, Richard, was a decorated war hero — a WWII veteran who served in five European campaigns, earning two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and the French Legion of Honor. And Craig was an aviation supply officer in the Marines from 1968 to 1971, including in Vietnam.
2020
COVID Response. Within five weeks of the shutdown, TDFF responds to the COVID-19 pandemic with $5 million support to five front-line organizations, focusing on food insecurity, basic housing, and mental illness. In addition, TDFF increases giving to social service organizations.
2022
Leadership. TDFF announces Ashley D. Joyce as chairman. The Foundation also elects the first non-family president of the Foundation, Mary Ann Roeser, who has been executive director since 2008 and shares TDFF’s passion, values, and commitment to the community.

Our Veterans. TDFF begins forming long-term partnerships with veteran organizations to support wellness and economic opportunity, in Chicagoland and throughout Illinois.
